CHAPTER 52
AFTER THE SPOILED KIDNAPPING ATTEMPT Caleb and Paddy had stayed at Stoneâs cottage, while Annabelle had gone back to her hotel, checked out and moved into another one in a different part of the city. She called Stone with the new address.
Early in the morning Stone received a call from an upset Reuben.
âMiltonâs driving me nuts, Oliver,â Reuben complained. âHeâs cleaned up my whole house. I canât find a damn thing. And Delta Dawnâs afraid to even come inside because the damn vacuumâs been running nonstop for hours.â Delta Dawn was Reubenâs hound of no pedigree whatsoever.
His voice dropped to a near whisper. âAnd youâre not going to believe what heâs done in the bathroom. It looks like something out of a womenâs magazine. Iâm too damn embarrassed to even take a crap in there.â
Stone said wearily, âI donât have room for him here, Iâm pretty full at the moment, Reuben.â
âI know, thatâs why I called. I thought Paddy could come and stay with me while Milton bunked with you. I mean, Paddyâs more my kind of roommate.â
âFinding you the ideal companion is not a priority right now; staying alive is,â Stone said bluntly. âAnd the less Paddyâs out in public the better.â
Reuben let out a deep sigh. âOkay, I guess I can hang with Mr. OCD for a little while longer. But we better nail this Bagger creep soon. Miltonâs already started to talk about taking me clothes shopping. And I draw the line at that shit.â
Several hours later Stone watched as a very irritable and wrinkled-looking Caleb came out of the bathroom dressed in his clothes from the night before.
âCaleb, when the men grabbed you last night, did they say anything?â
Caleb scowled. âOh, yes. They said if I made a sound theyâd kill me! And to think that when I was putting the key in my door, all I was contemplating was having a nice glass of sherry and rereading the opening to Don Quixote.â
âI meant did they mention that they were working for Jerry Bagger?â
âNo, they didnât. Actually, they didnât really say anything. They didnât have to, they had guns.â
âDid they mention Annabelle?â
âNo, nothing like that. Why?â
âDid they mention someone named John Carr?â
âWhoâs he?â
âNever mind. Did they say that name?â
âNo.â
Stone really had no way of knowing if the kidnappers were after Annabelle or John Carr. They could have tracked him down through Caleb, Stone reasoned. He had been to the library before to visit his friend. They had all just assumed that the men were with Bagger. But what if they were part of the team that had been killing Triple Sixes? That had killed Carter Gray? Yet if they were after him, surely they could have discovered his alter ego and also where he lived.
âSo what do I do now?â Caleb asked, breaking in on Stoneâs musings. âI shouldâve left for work ten minutes ago. Iâve got no clothes, no toiletries, nothing.â
Stone, annoyed at being interrupted, said curtly, âCall in sick.â
âThat takes care of today.
